Texas study finds that hospitals can profit from surgical errors

As if it were not frustrating enough when hospitals make mistakes that should have been prevented, it now turns out that they may even be making more money due to those mistakes. A recent study published by The Journal of the American Medical Association found that some Texas hospitals generate higher profit margins from those patients who suffer from preventable complications such as surgical errors.

Central Texas hospital fined by Medicare for surgical errors

Unfortunately for patients, yet another hospital in Texas has been fined by Medicare for its below-standard practices. A report found several deficiencies in the hospital's lab testing procedures, which caused many patients to undergo unnecessary procedures. It was also found that some emergency room patients had to wait up to five hours for their test results.

Texas Medicare patients at risk of surgical errors

Medicare recipients in the Houston, Texas, area may be concerned to hear about a recent report issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. According to the report, it is estimated that 6,000 hospital errors occur every month among Medicare patients alone. These errors are called "never events" and include surgical errors like operating on the wrong limb or having surgical equipment left inside a patient. It is also reported that 180,000 Medicare patients each year die from accidents and errors.

Supreme Court allows more compensation for birth injuries

Readers in the Houston, Texas, may be interested to know about a recent United States Supreme Court decision that now protects victims of medical practice. The case involved a girl who suffered from severe birth injuries in 2000 and now has cerebral palsy. The girl's family sued the doctor responsible for medical malpractice and obtained a settlement worth $2.8 million. Afterwards, Medicaid came knocking at their door demanding one-third of that amount. In a major victory for medical malpractice victims, the US Supreme Court sent Medicaid home empty-handed.
