Long term effects of brain injuries

Houston residents who have had a brain injury know how serious they can be. A traumatic brain injury can have a lifelong effect on a person and may require costly medication, rehabilitation and physical and emotional hardship. The stress, fear, depression and lifetime medical expenses affiliated with these types of injuries are often overwhelming.

There are many complications that can result from a brain injury. Depending on the severity of the injury, a sufferer can wind up in a coma, vegetative state, or other serious condition. They can also suffer from seizures, meningitis, and blood vessel damage. Nerve damage, including paralysis, vision loss, damage to eye movements, and other issues can also occur.

Cognitive problems also present themselves to many people who have had a severe brain injury. They can suffer difficulties in decision-making, memory retention, concentration, and learning. Victims might also have trouble solving problems, beginning and completing tasks, organizing, and performing other functions. Complications with communication can also arise, and issues with reading, writing and speaking can also wreak havoc on an individual's life. Behavioral and emotional changes can also occur.

The long-term effects of a brain injury can be profound. Often, those who suffer from a brain injury require years of rehabilitation. They can suffer physically from headaches, seizures, depression and other medical issues. Medical expenses for rehabilitation, hospitalization, medical equipment, and whatever else is needed can be astronomical.

If the brain injury was the result of negligence, then a victim and his family may wish to speak with a legal professional skilled in medical malpractice. An attorney can attempt to hold responsible the individual who caused the victim harm. If successful, compensation may be recovered for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering
