Preeclampsia and birth injuries; threats to mother and child

Many expectant mothers in Texas treat their prenatal care with the utmost importance. From regular doctor visits to scheduling important tests, they monitor their babies' growth and well-being. While many mothers reach their delivery dates and are able to bring healthy children into the world, others face complications that can put their lives and their children's lives at risk.

One serious condition that can pose life-threatening complications to both a pregnant mother and her unborn child is preeclampsia. Preeclampsia increases a mother's blood pressure and causes other physiological changes in her body. Those changes, if left unchecked, can cause her to suffer seizures, strokes, failure of her organs and even death, as well as significant challenges for her unborn child.

Doctors who provide prenatal care should assess their pregnant patients for preeclampsia during visits, most often through the regular checking of the mother's blood pressure. If her blood pressure registers above a threshold level, the doctor may follow a protocol to continue checking her blood pressure and other vital signs. If she does, the mother may be treated as a high-risk patient and receive specialized care to protect her health and that of her unborn child.

A doctor who fails to recognize the condition or fails to monitor a patient who shows signs of preeclampsia may be liable for a patient's losses, if she suffers losses because of the doctor's omissions or mistakes. The failure to diagnose preeclampsia can lead to birth injuries that can affect individuals for the rest of their lives and at worst, result in death.

Preeclampsia is a real medical condition that can be missed by doctors, nurses and other medical professionals. Individuals who have suffered losses because of medical professionals' failures to diagnose preeclampsia may have rights to seek compensation for their losses through medical malpractice litigation.
