When a Houston resident visits a doctor they expect that their doctor will be able to figure out what is wrong and recommend a treatment plan. Often this is exactly what happens but occasionally a serious injury occurs when a medical provider fails to adhere to the standard of care in their field of specialty.
A Minnesota man was recently awarded over $9 million dollars when a jury found his anesthesiologists negligent in the care they provided him. The man went to a hospital in 2012 because he was suffering from flu-like symptoms. He was given fluids for dehydration but it was then discovered that he had a perforated bowel. Fluids were halted in order to start him on anesthesia in preparation for surgery.
According to the lawsuit, this caused his blood pressure to drop and his spinal cord to receive inadequate blood flow. The patient alleged that this led to in spinal cord damage and paralysis. He has had intensive therapy to gain strength back in his legs but his insurance money has run out.
A negligent medical provider can cause serious harm to patients. If a person believes they have been the victim of a negligent doctor they may want to speak with a lawyer with experience in medical malpractice cases. An attorney can consult with medical experts, review medical records and determine what happened to cause the injury. If there is evidence of malpractice, the lawyer can file a lawsuit and seek to hold the medical provider responsible for their negligence.
