Birth injuries associated with forceps deliveries

A Houston couple's birth plan is quickly derailed by complications with the delivery. If the health of either the mother or baby seems to be in jeopardy, a medical team may use interventions to help the labor process. One device commonly used to aid delivery is forceps. Forceps help a doctor reach a baby, while it is still in the birth canal, and guide it into the world.

Forceps hold onto a baby's head, while a doctor or other medical professional pulls the child free. However, while not every use of forceps results birth injuries, some very serious complications can occur during and after their use.

Because of the pressure that the forceps put on the baby's head, a child may suffer significant trauma to a baby's skull and brain. Skull fractures can occur, as can bleeding in the head and brain. Some children who were delivered by forceps suffer seizures because of the trauma they endured during their deliveries.

Other harms that a child may suffer as a result of forceps delivery can include injuries to the face and eyes, facial palsy and others. Mothers can also suffer harm when forceps are used during a delivery, including uterine rupture, weakened muscles, pain and anemia.

Serious and life-threatening birth injuries can result from forceps deliveries, and individuals whose children have been hurt by this type of intervention have legal rights to pursue damages. Mistakes made during the labor and delivery process may be covered by medical malpractice law, and lawyers who work in this field should be consulted by those who have more questions about their potential cases.
