New technology offers hope for brain injury victims

Brain injuries are notoriously difficult to treat. Brain tissue does not heal the same way other parts of the body do. Medication and therapy can treat some symptoms of brain injury, but physically repairing the brain requires brain surgery. Brain surgery is, of course, invasive, difficult, risky and often not highly effective in treating injuries.

Recently however, some surgeons have been using robotic technology for new techniques to perform surgery on parts of the brain. The ROSA Brain robotic surgery system helps surgeons identify exactly where in the brain a patient's seizures are originating, and then insert extremely thin surgical instruments into the brain to correct the problem.

Surgeons say the process can be used for some patients when their epilepsy symptoms do not respond to medication.

Epilepsy is a condition which causes some people to suffer repeated seizures. Epilepsy can come about from many different causes, including genetic conditions, a blow to the head or a loss of blood to the brain due to medical problems.

According to doctors, about 1 in 10 traumatic brain injury patients will develop a form of epilepsy. Most epilepsy patients will respond to medication, but about 20 percent will not. The new technique offers promise to these patients.

As with most new medical technologies, the robotic surgery system is highly expensive. Those who have suffered brain injury need help paying for their treatment.

Those whose injuries were caused by medical malpractice or some other type of negligence can speak to a personal injury attorney to learn about their options for pursuing compensation that will help them pay for their much-needed treatment.
