Brain injuries could permanently change a person's personality

Many adults in Texas have a well-defined sense of self. They may describe themselves as patient and kind or they may value their sense of humor. Yet, what if these personality traits were suddenly lost? A person who experiences a brain injury can also suffer permanent personality changes. They may no longer know who they are, and the person they used to be may be nothing more than a memory.

This may be a surprising effect of a traumatic brain injury, but it can be a significant one. Personality changes can affect a person's relationships with loved ones. It could affect their work performance. Some may find that these connections are irreparable.

This is significant, because unlike many of the physical effects of a TBI, such as pain or dizziness, there isn't a specific sector in the brain responsible for every single emotion. While the brain's frontal lobes make it possible for a person to plan and organize, a TBI can change the core of the victim's personality, making it difficult to control emotions, such as anger and agitation.

When a person suffers a brain injury, it may be awhile before they are back on their feet, physically. However, a personality change resulting from a TBI can affect a person's life forever. This is a difficult situation for anyone to find themselves in, but it can be especially challenging if the injury was caused by the fault of another. Whether it is in a car crash, a slip-and-fall accident or a sporting injury, TBIs often result from the negligent or reckless acts of another. When this happens, the brain injury victim may wish to pursue financial compensation from the responsible party. While no amount of money can completely undo the long-lasting damage a TBI can cause, it can at least help a person out financially as they deal with medical bills, lost wages and other expenses incurred due to the injury
